Title: of mossy apple tree 3/5
Medium: Graphite rubbing of apple tree bark and Dartmoor moss Size: 30 x 42 cm Date: 2016 Inspired by a line in Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem Frost at Midnight this series of five two-dimensional works celebrate the complexity of our English countryside. Playing with Coleridge's words, at first glance what you see is what you get - moss covered apple bark. Winking back to the Coleridge's text based work the common names of five different species of sphagnum moss are painted in sharp letters using pigment made from Dartmoor moss. The bold lettering has been applied over a multi-tonal layer of graphite rubbed apple tree bark, creating an almost three-dimensional affect. Creating a deeper level to the work the artist has chosen these sphagnum mosses for their importance within the carbon cycle. Found together with peatland these mosses draw carbon dioxide in from our atmosphere and lock it away in the peaty sub-layer in a process called carbon capture. |
